Condon Transfer Station (proposed)
The county has considered installing a transfer station (a garbage dump facility) on Barber Creek Road. This proposed facility would create a dump site, cause trash and litter to spread over the area, and create a bear hazard with
Background
In late 2022, the Missoula County Planning Department raised the issue of a Condon transfer station. This concept was first noted in the draft Swan Valley regional plan, but never requested by the community. After some public comments, which were overwhelmingly negative, the idea was tabled by the Swan Valley Community Council. It was revealed in public documents that the installation of this transfer station will result in at least a $300/year per landowner tax increase.
Its current status in the county government is not known, but we are working to find out.
Our position
Based on significant input from the people of the Swan Valley, who overwhelmingly oppose the transfer station, the Stewards of the Swan Valley are opposed to this infrastructure, and believe that it will not only financially penalize the community, but that it will increase trash on the highways and in the immediate area of the dump, and will attract bears and endanger them if they get food conditioned.
How you can help
Stay tuned to this page for continuing developments as they occur. We are concerned that this issue has not actually gone away, and intend to protect the interests of the Swan Valley by communicating any developments, and opposing increases in taxes.
